You've scheduled a junk removal appointment with Papi's — great call. Now what? A little prep work before our crew arrives in Fresno or Clovis can make a big difference: faster service, lower cost, and a smoother overall experience. Here's exactly what to do.

The Golden Rule of Junk Removal Prep

Junk removal is priced by volume — how much space your items take up in the trailer. Anything you can do to reduce volume (donating items, breaking down boxes, pre-sorting) directly reduces your bill. We do all the heavy lifting, but you control how much ends up in the trailer.

Step 1: Do a Quick "Keep or Go" Sort

Before our crew arrives, do a fast walk-through of the areas being cleaned. You don't need to move anything — just decide what's staying and what's going. This lets us work faster because we're not stopping to ask questions about every item.

  • Walk each room and mentally tag what's leaving
  • Use sticky notes or tape to mark items you're keeping if there's any chance of confusion
  • Move items you're keeping out of the work area if possible
  • Have a clear answer for any large items that might be borderline

Step 2: Donate What You Can First

This is the single best way to reduce your junk removal cost. Items that can be donated don't take up space in our trailer, which means a lower bill for you. Good candidates for donation:

  • Furniture: Sofas, tables, chairs, dressers — if they're functional and not heavily damaged
  • Clothing: Any clean, wearable items
  • Appliances: Working refrigerators, washers, dryers, microwaves
  • Household goods: Dishes, cookware, lamps, décor
  • Electronics: Working TVs, computers, phones

Many Fresno-area organizations offer free pickup for large items. See our post on where to donate furniture and household goods in Fresno for a full list with contact info.

Step 3: Consolidate Your Items in One Area

If you're able, moving your junk to a central spot — the garage, driveway, or front yard — makes our job faster and your bill lower. Here's why it helps:

  • Faster loading: We spend less time navigating the home and more time loading the trailer
  • Accurate quotes: Seeing everything together helps us give you a more precise price
  • Less disruption: Fewer crew members moving through your home

That said — if you can't move heavy items, don't worry. That's exactly what we're here for. We'll come to the items wherever they are.

Step 4: Break Down Boxes and Flat Items

Unbroken boxes take up a lot of truck space because of their shape. Breaking them flat dramatically reduces volume:

  • Flatten cardboard boxes and stack them
  • Break apart particle board furniture if it's already damaged
  • Remove loose packing material (bubble wrap, foam, packing peanuts) and bag it separately
  • Disassemble any furniture you're comfortable taking apart

Even reducing a quarter-truck of air-filled boxes to a flat stack can drop you to a smaller pricing tier. See our pricing page to understand how volume affects cost.

Step 5: Clear a Path for the Crew

Our crew will be moving large, heavy items through your home. A clear path protects your floors, walls, and doorframes — and speeds everything up.

  • Clear hallways, doorways, and stairwells of tripping hazards
  • Move cars from the driveway so we can park close to the entrance
  • Unlock gates and make sure side-yard access is clear
  • Move pets to a safe area so they're not underfoot during the job

Step 6: Know What We Can and Can't Take

Most household items are fine — furniture, appliances, electronics, yard waste, construction debris, and more. A few items need special handling or can't go in our trailer:

We Take

  • Furniture (all types)
  • Appliances
  • Electronics & TVs
  • Mattresses
  • Yard waste
  • Construction debris
  • Hot tubs & sheds

Special Handling Needed

  • Paint cans (must be dried out)
  • Car batteries
  • Motor oil
  • Propane tanks
  • Asbestos materials
  • Medical waste / sharps

Not sure if we can take something? Call us at (559) 575-0516 and we'll tell you right away. For a full list, check out our post on what can and can't be removed by junk removal services.

Step 7: Be Home (or Designate Someone)

We'll need someone available at the start of the appointment to confirm what's going, walk through the space, and approve the final quote before we load anything. After that, you're free to step away while we work.

  • Be available at the start to do a 5-minute walk-through with the crew
  • Confirm the price before we begin loading
  • You can leave us to work once everything is confirmed — no need to supervise
  • Have a payment method ready (cash, card, Venmo, etc.)

How Long Does It Take?

  • Small pickup (1-3 items): 30-45 minutes
  • Partial load (1/4–1/2 trailer): 1-1.5 hours
  • Full trailer load: 1.5-2.5 hours
  • Full property cleanout: 2-4+ hours depending on size

Good prep can shave 20-40% off total job time — especially for larger cleanouts.

Summary: Your Pre-Appointment Checklist

  • Walk through and decide what's going
  • Mark or move items you're keeping
  • Donate usable items before the appointment
  • Consolidate junk to one area if possible
  • Flatten boxes and break down furniture
  • Clear pathways, driveway, and gates
  • Secure pets
  • Be available at the start for the walk-through

None of these steps are required — we can handle a completely unprepared job — but each one helps the appointment go faster and cheaper. Questions? Call us anytime at (559) 575-0516. We're available 24/7.
