Moving is already stressful enough. The last thing you want is to realize — once the truck pulls away — that you've left behind a garage full of junk, a pile of furniture nobody wanted, or boxes of stuff you haven't unpacked in three years. This checklist will help you get ahead of it so move-out day goes clean and smooth.

Your Moving Cleanout Timeline

  • 4–6 weeks out: Declutter, decide what's not coming with you
  • 2–3 weeks out: Schedule donations or junk removal
  • 1 week out: Final pass on garage, shed, attic, storage
  • Moving day: Last-minute checks before the truck leaves
  • After movers leave: Final walkthrough and any remaining items

4–6 Weeks Before Moving: The Declutter Phase

This is when you should make the big decisions — before boxes get packed and time runs out. Go room by room and sort everything into four categories:

1. Pack & Move

Items you're definitely keeping and bringing to your new home

2. Sell

Valuable items — furniture, electronics, tools — that are worth selling on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or OfferUp

3. Donate

Working items in decent condition — see our Fresno donation guide for locations

4. Junk

Broken, worn-out, or unwanted items with no resale or donation value

The more ruthlessly you sort now, the less you're paying to move — and the less you're paying for junk removal.

Room-by-Room Declutter Checklist

Kitchen

  • Expired pantry items, spices, and condiments
  • Duplicate or unused small appliances (old blender, bread maker, rice cooker)
  • Chipped or incomplete dish sets
  • Old pots, pans, or kitchen tools you haven't used in years

Bedrooms

  • Old mattresses (we offer mattress pickup in Fresno)
  • Clothing you haven't worn in over a year
  • Old furniture you're not taking (dressers, nightstands, desks)
  • Stacks of old books, magazines, or media

Living Room

  • Old sofas, recliners, or loveseats you're not taking
  • Old TVs and entertainment equipment
  • DVD collections, VHS tapes, or outdated media
  • Décor you won't keep in your new home

Garage & Storage

  • Old tools, equipment, or machinery you won't use again
  • Cardboard boxes from old purchases
  • Old paint cans, chemicals, or hazardous materials (check with city for disposal)
  • Lawn equipment you're not taking (old mowers, hoses, garden tools)
  • Holiday decorations and seasonal items stored for years without use

2–3 Weeks Out: Schedule What You're Not Taking

Now that you know what's staying behind, arrange for it to leave — before moving day chaos sets in.

  • Schedule junk removal early — Same-day is often available at Papi's, but booking a few days out means you have flexibility on timing
  • Arrange donation pickups — Salvation Army can take large items with a free pickup, but they book up
  • Post listings to sell — Items on Facebook Marketplace take 1-2 weeks to sell at the right price
  • Confirm what movers won't take — Most moving companies won't move hazardous materials, certain electronics, or plants

1 Week Out: Final Sweep of Hidden Spaces

This is when stuff gets left behind. Do a dedicated pass through spaces that get forgotten:

  • Attic or crawlspace
  • Shed, backyard structures, or outbuildings
  • Hall closets, linen closets, pantry shelves
  • Under beds and in bedroom closets
  • Garage shelving, cabinets, and wall hooks
  • Storage units offsite — don't forget to clean those out too

Moving Day: Before the Truck Leaves

Once the movers have loaded everything, do one final walkthrough before signing off:

  • Walk every room one more time — open closets, check under sinks, look in corners
  • Check the garage, backyard, and any outbuildings
  • Confirm appliances staying with the home are in place
  • Photograph any property damage already present (protects your deposit)

After the Movers Leave: Don't Leave Junk for the Next Owner

Leaving junk behind can cost you your security deposit, create bad reviews from buyers, or result in cleanup fees charged by landlords. If there's still stuff left after the movers go, it needs to go before you hand over keys.
